I'd have to go with buildering since it's almost uniformly illegal, not that it would stop a lot of people around here. But when people get credit for it and full page writeups in the stupid local newspaper, it can start to hurt our already tarnished image and I don't want anything else to threaten our access.

I'm not sure what exactly you're confused about so please forgive me if this seems condescending. It's been a long week and my brain hurts.

I'd have to go with buildering since it's (=buildering is) almost uniformly illegal, not that it (=being illegal) would stop a lot of people around here (=rrg.com and/or Bloomington). But when people get credit for it (=buildering) and full page writeups in the stupid local newspaper, it (=their actions) can start to hurt our (=climbers around the region/world) already tarnished image and I don't want anything else to threaten our access.[/quot]
I think a lot of people view us as a bunch of nature loving hippies with no money who just freeload off of the natural resources. We leave fixed gear and chalk all over the rock. We trample the cliffs (and help make the trails that hikers use). We're accused of defecating on oil derricks. We don't always have the blessings of land owners.
People engaging in high risk behavior while trespassing for the sole purpose of getting a rush for themselves portrays "climbers" as selfish, careless pseudo-felons who are just in it for themselves.
If this still isn't making sense, please shoot me a pm with small words describing exactly what the problem is and I'll be happy to try again.
