So, it pisses me off immensely when someone who has never climbed outside in their life even though they live under an hour from the Red can "send" a gym route that I'm falling all over. There really wasn't any point to this, that just pisses me off. Depresses the hell out of me so I go home and eat oreos and put on my tights.

dink, dink....all that it means is that you are no more of a real climber than the chuffer who dusted you. getting worked up about any indoor climbing signifies a small penis.
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

You are not a bona fide climber until you:

1. can escape a belay
2. can climb solid on 5.10 rock of every type, style and technique
(many real rock 5.9s will shut down a 5.12 gym climber)
3. have tried Bouldering, Sport climbing, Trad climbing and Aiding
You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.

Kind of like a plumber apprentice. You are not a bona fide plumber until you learn all the tools of the trade.

I hate these debates but here are my thoughts (right or wrong)
you can not define everyone the same. you can not standardize a golden grade that makes you a climber. its different for everyone. even if everyone on this site says to me, "you are not a climber." i would smile and keep climbing. if you have ever seen "masters of stone 3" (i think its 3). the Climbing mag ad before the video says "passion you either have it or you don't, you can not fake it" i think if you are passionate about climbing you will find someone to take you outside to climb instead of climbing inside, you maximize YOUR own potential as a climber be it one grade or another.

ps: skychick those quotes are sick. i realy liked them.

At the risk of getting sucked into a very relevant thread, I think a few things make "real" climbers.

1. Experience.
2. Someone who recognizes what is and is not safe.
3. Someone who knows when they're in over their head.
4. Someone who has gotten in over their head.
5. Someone who has taken a bunch of falls and feels comfortable with them, preferably on lead, too.
Ticking is gym climbing outdoors.
