Best bet is to get someone who knows what is going on to climb with you all the first few times outside. Or hire a guide.

There are a few books that do a good job explaining how it is done, but having someone show you first hand is greatly encouraged. Wes has the right idea.

Seraph,

Wes and Andrew's advice is good. If you can hook up with an experienced climber and come down to Muir, on the main trail leading from the parking lot, there is a "practice" topanchor with chains located only 8 feet up on a nice rock wall. It is easier and safer to instruct cleaning anchors here. And, if you do screw up and deck, its only a bruise on your butt and ego.

Can't go wrong with any of John Long's books. There is info online at various sources as well.
