Sure energy can be wasted, but simply using it isn't waste. I like electricity. :D

COme on! I can believe that is a representation of population density but an actual Photograph? taken at a time when the entire Earth was in darkness and there we no clouds?! I guess they could take millions of photographs and piece then together to make this but I HIGHLY doubt it's real.
Another thing, Talking about "wasting" resources. The one about "wasting" water really makes me laugh. Where do you think water goes after you use it? It get's recycled. you end up drinking your piss eventually. The earth is a wonderful filter. Thee IS an unlimited and constantly renewed water supply on this planet. True, when people move to places where water is scarce, there can be problems. but what do you expect when you attempt to populate a desert?

As far as energy goes, fossil fuels will be used until they run out, or until they are too expensive to produce. then and only then will we go to another source of energy. Everyone bitches about the greedy oil companies today....Well, How long after a new, clean energy source is produced do you think it will take until the companies who got rich from the discovery will be called greedy? Not long , I am sure.

Wanna cut down on energy use? Turn off your furnace right now! Turn off your TV or the light you read by. Ride your bike to work in this 0 degree weather! Turn off your computer, your stereo. the stove or oven you cook with. Right about now, I am loving the fact that I am not living in a tent or a cave. It's COLD! and even though I love the outdoors and prefer to spend most of my time there, I am damn thankful I can come in and turn my thermostat up to a comfy temp. How dare me!!!!...;)

Next thing you know, someone will be telling me that my new cookbook: "101 Ways to Grill Spotted Owl and Perigrine Falcon" is a bad thing.

My point was that energy in the form of electricity can be wasted, contrary to what a couple of you were saying. I didn't say electricity is bad (duh again). However, electricity is generated by limited natural resources. They won't "go to waste if we don't use them." Think about your energy use. Do people need to leave their porch lights on all night? Do you need to run your heat at 72 degrees when you are not even home? Do you need to dry all your clothes in an electric or gas dryer? ....

Electricity can be and certainly is wasted. If people realize that some luxuries are actually not neccessities, maybe they will cut back a little on the luxuries. Whatever are the specifics, I'm sure we can all save just a little more energy if we think about it for even a few seconds.

You just want us to leave our porch lights off because you are a NINJA and want to break into our house! Think about it...you tell us not to dry our clothes, THEN you tell us to turn our thermostats down! Sounds like you are trying to trick us into putting on wet clothes in a cold house so that we will catch hypothermia and be powerless to fight you off! :D

oh and Hefe I agree, that photo has to be a composite. Not only are there no clouds, but the photo implies that it is dark everywhere at the same time (with all those lights on). It's still cool, but very eye opening about population densities. Australia is looking mighty inviting.

I still have to disagree on the whole wasting of electricity thing, i think the point you're trying to make is about wasting the resources that are predominantly used to create electricty on the east coast. Electricity is easly harnessed and stored to the point that it can be considered renewable as long as there is some one smart enough to harness any of the potentialy energy around us. Unlike water we do have to take part in the process none the less it certaintly is easy to generate electricity. Wind, solar, water all can be used to create tons of electricity. Don't always look at our dependents on energy as a limitation, focus on ways to lesson the impact on the environment. Think of it this way, the sooner we run out of fossil fuels or they become outrageously priced the sooner we will hopefully be able to switch to a better energy source.
