Confused in Ohio:

First off, there are no real climbers in Ohio, so you may not need to worry about the rest of this.

1. Should REAL rock climbers send .12s or just climb them?

Send..send..surely you don't have the boy scout mentality of climbing. If you hang on the rope, grab a draw, weight the pro, have your fat ass pulled thru the crux, then you have not "climbed" the route. So don't go spraying about the climb at Miguel's that night. And if you can't do every move on the route, don't even think about spewing about how you are "working" the route.

2. If send is the answer, should REAL rock climbers onsight those .12s or will a mere redpoint after 8 attempts suffice?

On sighting is the true measure. When you first become a REAL rock climber, ther is an urge to blab about that 11d/12a that you did in perfect temps on your 57th go, but don't embarass yourself. Just continue to climb silently as a gumby, and buy your time until you can onsight 12's with a "Euro blow".

3. Must those .12s be uncontested .12s, nothing that you will spend page after page debating only to surrender to a thread hijack on fruit juice?

Uncontested yes. Unfortunately, climbing at the Red allows many to pose as REAL climbers since all of the 12a's are so soft. I have consulted with the gods, and the decision is that 12c at the Red is equivalent to 12a anywhere else in the US. It is such a catch 22 at the Red. If it is well travelled, you have chalk to follow, thereby lowering the grade. If it is a newer route, then you have a good chance of half the holds crumbling under your steely grip, thereby sending you earth bound.

4. So you're saying REAL rock climbers easily get laid?

Um, I am married now, so I can't comment on that one. But back in the day....

Hope this helps...

perhaps we can call you an apprentice. if one bristles at a notion, then maybe they are questioning their own definitions.

And was 11a the line of demarcation when YOU could only climb at that level? Seems pretty arbitrary.

In reality, all of you gravity-challenged, foul smelling bi-peds who call yourselves "climbers" down here in the Red are a joke. We Eastern Wood Rats routinely free solo 5.16d crags. Should we proclaim that you are not a real rock climber until you can climb at this level?

That Dipsi gal wisely said it best: "I climb rocks; therefore I am."

rizzo,
who says I can climb 11a now? My expertise was called upon, and I filled the void. all that crap about climbing for self, about communing with nature, about not caring about grades, about hanging with friends, about not caring if you get the send...blah, blah...I think I am gonna hurl if I hear one more lie along these lines.

People use these blasted excuses because they are too lazy to train. It's like the fat person who does a 5K, walking half the course. No ma'am, you are NOT a runner. Runners are in shape. Runners don't eat oreo's at water stops. And by god, runners don't wear tights that allow people to see your fat-dimpled ass.

I just want to point out that all this was covered in a thread last spring started by none other than ... oh, you. I remember because I'm still searching for my reason. Please let me know if you find it.

I think I should step in at this moment and tell a disgusting story involving poop, drugs, animal sex, and a climbing harness that no one will ever wear again.

But I won't.

Carry on.
