I know most iPod users will be familiar with my listening style. Let me set it up real quick first:
I worked in record stores and music mags for 12 years so I have a cd collection that fills a 4'x6.5' shelf, with several hundred cds in sleeves (I think I last counted 2500 cds), as well as around 1000 lps. I've been slowly but surely ripping my cd collection (I'm guessing I've ripped 1/5th of it so far) as 192kbps mp3s. In addition I've got a bunch of stuff from friends, live bootlegs, etc. I'm up to 56.8GB. So I've got a shitload of music.
I started listening to my whole collection using Winamp on random last year and loved it! So what I do now is burn cdrs with a random bunch of mp3s on them. It's usually around 150 songs and the only editing I do is changing the numbers at the beginnings of file names to keep two songs by the same artist playing back to back and deleting really huge files (like some FSOL and Orb live sets or my own live sets). These cds are so cool because almost all the songs are good (IMO) and the variety is just dizzying. Devo followed by a string quartet followed by Ministry followed by Johnny Cash followed by the Ramones followed by Miles Davis...
If anyone wants to swap cds like this please PM me. I've got a group of about ten people that I trade these things with and I love this sort of random slice of someone else's musical tastes. It's like FM was like in the 70's except with more variety.
That being said, I've been listening to the new Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys Live at Fillmore East just lately. Wow.
What are you listening to?

He was amazing. I've played a LOT of loud electric guitar in concert and watching him play just makes me want to sell all my gear. In one shot in the movie Hendrix he's playing a song in concert and his guitar has gone totally out of tune. He's barreing on the neck and pulling the individual strings into tune (two or three were badly off) with each chord change, while singing. I really don't think anyone has come close to him since.

I combined my 40GB with my dad's 20GB and my brothers 60GB of mp3s. Then I went through and tagged the ones with missing info. You must get a purchased version of MusicMatch software to manage your music. It's the best software I have found. It will go and tag all of your music with song, artist, genre, album cover art, etc. Then you can listen by artist, album, genre, random, popularity, etc. Then hook your PC up to your home stereo. Headphones out to Left Right in on stereo. It rocks! Then I have the Nomad to go portable. You gotta love technology.Alan Evil wrote:I'm up to 56.8GB
I recently put together a CD of acoustic or acoustic cover then the original song back to back - turned out nicely.
Good for playlists and burning cd projects but sucks for managing an iPod. I used to use it but now it's iTunes and PureAudio.TradMike wrote: You must get a purchased version of MusicMatch software to manage your music. It's the best software I have found.
Back on topic.....PARTICLE!!!!!!! Got a show this week from 2003 that freaking crushes! Any Particle fans out there? We got a show coming up the 24th in Ashevegas. Just picked up a 3rd row Wilco ticket in Cinci Fri night, got a Sound Tribe show Monday at Bogarts, and a Garaj Mahal show next Sat. Anyone hitting any of these shows?
Last count I have 60GB cleaned up in iTunes and another 10 that I still need to sort out the MD5 and tags on. My 40gb Precious has been full for a while now so I think I'm just going to have to upgrade to the 60gb.

I've had MMJB (paid) for five years and I'm sick of it. It doesn't rip worth a shit (very slow and lots of errors), it eats up tons of system resources, takes forever to open, and it looks awful. Plus, of late it seems to have gotten more and more concentrated on paid downloads and internet radio. I use MMJB to make my random mp3 cds still but that's only because I haven't found a better program. For ripping I use dbPoweramp Music Converter. Good stuff. Super fast, works in the background, doesn't waste system resources with a shit ton of graphics, AND the rips of cds sound markedly better than rips using MMJB. For listening to tunes on my computer I use Winamp.TradMike wrote:You must get a purchased version of MusicMatch software to manage your music.
