need recommendations for where to climb

Post by tvanstrate2000 »

headed to ky from minnesota next week for family committment. am looking to escape a day and head to red river gorge for a day of sport climbing. any recommendations on what area would provide us a great day of 5.8-5.11 sport climbing. do not have a guide book, but have a map of the majors crags. any suggestions to what area would provide us alot of sport climbing without alot of searching. thanks. it's snowing here!!!! tvanstrate2000

transvestite2000?

Ok, somebody local volunteer to guide him. How many thousand sport routes in the Red fit his/her description?

Just in case, start printing the online guide book. With little work you can find developed crags that will make you want to move more than the snow. And once you get to the parking lots you'll probably be able to find someone to give you directions.

Oh yeah, if you can camp out the night before, go to Miguel's pizza. I've heard that some of the people that go there know a thing or two about climbing.

So, which crag do all of the TV's hang out these days? There were a bunch at Muir the other day, but they were post-op TV's, not pre-op, if that makes any difference.

2nd try at first question posted!

Post by tvanstrate2000 »

hi all,
hope some of you got your kicks  :D
my wife found RedRiverClimbing.com last nite and asked a question, hoping for some helpful suggestions.
just to clear the air..... she is female, and not a transvestite. no offense to anyone.
i am her husband posting this question again under her sign on name, since i'm at work, am not able to get my email to confirm email address, so i can post under my name. wheeew.......ok.

we are headed to kentucky (fort knox) to see our son on Nov. 24. he is graduating from army basic training. during our visit with him(he also rock climbs) we thought it would be fun to do 1-2 days of sport climbing at red river gorge. i have heard good things about your area from other online climbing sites and word of mouth.
i realize this is a large climbing area with lots of crags and various routes, some of which a person may need to hike to get to.
could someone suggest 1 or 2 sport climbing crags at red river which are easily accessible from the car/road. we would be looking to climb sport routes rated from 5.7 to 5.10c. south exposure would be nice.
checked some of the pictures in the site album. the rock looks fun for climbing with the pockets and all, is this limestone?
looking forward to visiting your state
thanks in advance
best regards

Roadside,Global,Torrent,Military,Left Flank are all easy to get to. Don't leave valuables in your car and be sure to stop in Miguel's after climbing.
It's all Corbin sandstone and the friction is great this time of year.

Its amazing how little knowledge you need about the red to be able to head down there for the weekend (i mean knowledge about the area, not knowledge on how to rockclimb). anyhow, get a map to miguel's and when you get there ask around. torrent (and Roadside) has some great climbing, it just gets a bum rap sometimes because people climb there so much that they get sick of it. if its your first time there, you'll have a blast.

one other thing to think about is that climbing at the red is...different. i moved down here from wisconsin and got whooped pretty bad my first few trips because the red is really pumpy and endurance based compaired to stuff back home. in my opinion, Funk Rock City (while its a hike and harder to find) is more technique based and would probably be appreciated by a minnesotian climber.

I'll be down there starting wednesday night thru sunday if you need advice on where to go. I have kinda long, curly hair and drive an Outback with Wisconsin plates.

good luck
phil
