I agree with the Evil One woks are killer, mine is even a lame electric one But I love it, I do use peanut oil instead of others because it takes high heat, and most anything especially vegetables are great, cabbage is cheap and tasty when stir fried and it always seems like you have plenty left over for lunch the next day

Beans. Cheap, healthy, entertaining as long as you're not entertaining. Store brand mac and cheese, or pay the extra $.20 for the good stuff.

The cheapest way to get the essential nutrients remains the same. Pasta is dirt cheap for carbs. Tuna and beans are the cheapest source of protein. If you are creative, you can make a few meals out of these. You'll get sick of them very fast, but they're cheap and they go a long way. :)
