Yikes! You back in June when I was there the water was cold enough that if I'd have dropped a shoe in the drink I'd have just chalked it up as a a loss and call if lobster food. I can't imagine how cold the water must've been as of late. Maybe he should have swam out there to retrieve the shoe while on belay.
I see they are still lopping off mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Electricity isn't cheap.

The water temperature actually only changes a few degrees winter to summer, but is at it's warmest in september as it has had all summer to get that way. usually around 12 degrees celcius, or about 53/55 F this time of year.
But I agree, I would have left my shoe in the drink. and went to the local pub to have one.
