How many of you have seem the TV commercial for Nissan. Bunch of guys speeding thru some desert scenery, all shouting something about "the Rock!", "yeah the Rock". They all jump out of that perfectly clean SUV with their clean gear and then get scared of the "Rock" and head somewhere else.
That is exactly what I experience every weekend with my buds, you can find us speeding thru the southern region yelling some crazy stuff about "the Rock"...LOL
I think that's what non-climbers think our weekends are like, it's feed to them through the TV so it must be true.
That's what climbing means to me
What does climbing mean to you?
P2U---I am right with you! I, too, have a young one and everything has changed for me. All those evenings I spent heading to the crags are done with. All those weekend campfires have ceased. I've been climbing 3 times in 8 months---but those three times have been nothing but fun. Sure, I'm not climbing the grades or making weekly improvement but so what...
climbing is no longer my drive but something fun I do when I can.

Rags,
Thanks for your comment I am trying to find a balance with climbing and my new changed life.... I want to climb for fun and do but I also want to get exercise and push myself. I love the "lifestyle" too... and like everyone said most people think we're a bit weird for our love of climbing.
But I don't want to drone to work and drone home every day... yes I love my family and my new son and they are a hugh wonderul piece of the puzzel, not the entire thing. I just gotta figure out how all the pieces fit together...which I know I will.

Lest we all forget... climbing is a mostly meaningless pursuit that we do for fun.
Sort of veering here, but don't you hate it when someone asks you, "So you rappel?" Or they claim they have been climbing and say something idiotic like, "I don't know what grade I was climbing, but I was passing up everyone else!"
I actually had a guy show me a picture of a girl on Mark's Climbing Adventure and say, "No wonder you can do that; you've got a cable to hold on to!"
Kiss my patootie!

What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

Finney...........ruined is a past tense verb/ad-verb. "Where ya' been - gone"......
"Change is the only constant"......and what a catepillar calls "the end" is one of the most beautiful products of Isness!
Shed your skin dude. Yea we all have injuries and they suck, but you can choose the couch now or later.......I prefer to beat myself up as much as possible before I settle for status quo!
Back to the thread......climbing is a serious game for me. I have set myself up for a meaningless game. And what is the by product? Numerous friends that i love, a low fat diet (ie HIGH CARB), plenty of exercise and a fairly healthy bod at 40, many challenges, successes, and failures.
Thanks to these friends (18 years worth, Miguel & Miguel's-for sure!), I seem to have mutated to a fairly stable fifth circuit conciousness norm. I may not climb the rest of the year (my hardest ever!-then a dissappointing injury), but I can feel true joy and reward belaying by buddy sending the Legend or Calopso 3.
Rock on!
Being OUTSIDE with friends=FUN!
