Home Depot and Lowes, but if you want a good one that's easy to find, go to Meijer.

I have always found the sticks laying around on the ground work well

stick clips have saved my ankles and ass many many times, not to mention they are a great way to bail off of sport climbs that prove to be over my head and when it down pours/snows while on route...you never need to litter the walls with bail biners again.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm wondering now whether their is a Home Depot or not in Bloomington. And thanks for the Squid comments and the golf ball retreiver ones, too.

And don't laugh, Meadows! I remember a long time ago when a group of us wanted to work Ro Shampo, but none of us was strong enough to pull all the moves, one of us stick clipped his way up the entire route. Overhanging as it is, it was a bear.

I started with a painting pole - it had two sections: a fiberglass outer/lower part and an aluminum inner/upper part. It's fairly stiff, but shortish and heavy. When the inner locking mechanism broke, I replaced it with a light bulb changing pole (minus the basket at the end). It's a three segment, all fiberglass setup. It's longer, and less stiff than the painting pole, but it's stiffer than a tent pole or golf-ball pole. I've got it set up with an 'alligator'-type clamp (the kind with rubber pads on the tips). With the clamp, the lightbulb changing pole seems like the perfect balance of stiffness/weight/length.

From what people are saying here, I think I'm going to get a Squid this fall (the lightbulb pole may not be stiff enough, though)

Trust me, it isn't. I have a cheap paint pole (~$15) and it's not as stiff as it should be to make it work properly.

Learn how to use a regular stick. Nothing beats bunny ears on a long stick. Seriously.

Talk all this bad ass talk and shake like Elivs when your feet hit the bolt. Its losers like you that give climbing a bad name. If you ever need a stick I got one for ya !
