What do you do at work?
Ray's right about the way to waste company time. There's almost always someone around who likes to rant about his work. You can listen to them, ask to try what they do. I worked as a temp at Tektronix (measurement and test equipment) and learned way more than I'll ever need to know about calibrating, repairing, and using measurement equipment (mostly oscilliscopes, logic testers, etc.). I ended up moving away before I could try selling myself to HP's test and measurement company, but it wouldn't have been too hard. My friend worked as a goddamned telemarkter until she got sick of it, learned to operate their aging voice mail system, and 6 months later is now second in charge of all things IT. She is working on getting some certs, and may get a $10k/yr raise working IT at a more reputable company.
so much complaining!
It can't compare to the heydays of the big consulting racket. I knew two different people who worked for Andersen Consulting (not related to Enron) who spent months being paid to do nothing. Not 'show up to the office and putter' but nothing. They were 'on hold' between projects. Boy, did I feel thier pain.
