We'll be nothing like the Chicago gym then. I'm not very likeable and I cannot boulder for shit.tomdarch wrote:The whole thing with "the Shop" in Chicago had/has its plusses and minuses. For the most part, the members were low key about it, and membership had a lot to do with being a likeable person who climbs f*@king hard. It wasn't terribly 'clubby'. (from the outside, at least) I did meet some people who were marginal members and were wankers about it, but the core members were/are pretty nice. It does have the problem of not being "merely a bunch of friends who built a wall" - instead, it's perceived as being an 'elite climber' thing, so there may be some strong climbers who 'expect' to be let in. Also, even with the facility that they built, most members still climb at other gyms for some variety.

A waiver such as the one RQ uses supplies documetation that the climber knew the basics of belaying and the risks involved. They had a little belay test and then watched the belayer before sigining off on them. A bouldering gym would be harder to document like this. In KY it is my understanding that a person cannot sign away their access to the judicial system by means of a liability waiver. In any case the legal costs of defending yourself can be pretty high. Thats what makes home walls so popular for just a few good friends to share. Everybody knows everybody else and trusts each other not to sue. Personally, I worry more about family members (in-laws) suing me over my wall that I do climbers. My brother inlaws' spoiled three year old, said "I have an owie in my arm" after he spent the day mostly sitting under my wall. Since his parents couldn't see his "owie" they told us that he must have pulled an arm muscle on my wall. (bad wall, bad bad wall). Now everytime I know their coming over I take every jug hold off and lock them in the shed until they leave. If he's gonna get another "owie" it's gonna be from pulling on slopers.

The co-op sounds like a really good idea, but with all things in life technicalities seem to rule the situation. I know with alot of the skateparks(skateboard) I've been to all you have to do is sign a waiver and it supposedly clears the "owner" of all liabilities. Plus I believe there is one company that offers insurance to parks across the country as a whole and each person pays a yearly due which covers him or her in any of those parks. All that is not a bad idea but I highly doubt if that type of thing would work for a co-op climbing gym. It would be nice though. Oh MCRIB...stick to the attic training! Nothing wrong with a little bit of a Rocky workout. I want to see blood, sweat, and tears! If none of that shit works for ya' I've got a 17 pound baby you can do curls with. Fuck it anyways dude, let's go bowling.
