I cannot believe that he'd insult us like that Mia. When you get home, I'll make the spinach dip, you make the pineapple back and we'll get together and have a cry fest. 'kay?

I haven't seen the 9/11 movie & don't know if I will? I am reading a book about the life of Tecumseh & how our fledgling nation dealt with native peoples. Then I just read in Sunday's paper that the Shawnees are in court trying to get back the Symmes Purchase that would include the elite Cincinnati suburbs of Indian Hill & Montgomery. The Shawnee's want to build a huge casino there.

I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 and I'd recommend seeing it. Why not? You watch the news, don't you? You can take from it what you want, and if you leave the movie feeling skeptical about some of Moore's viewpoints, do some research on the subject you're curious about. I enjoyed the movie-- especially the part where he was trying to get members of Congress to sign up their children to go fight in the war. Hmmm... the cause doesn't seem quite so glorious and necessary when it's your own children's blood that might be spilled, does it? I think everyone who supports the war should have to either register to fight in Iraq or send one of their children over to fight.

come on yas...last time I checked there was no draft....being in the military is voluntary. it is funny how people want to have the benefits of the military life (travel, education), yet balk at the duty part.

what about someone like me...who do I send over there? I am too old for service, and I have no kids. does that mean I can't have an opinion on the war?

Yeah, I guess it is voluntary... "Hmmm... I'm a poor kid from an inner city and I can either live the rest of my life in indigence or listen to these recruiters... what they're saying sounds pretty damn nice..."

I don't know all the details for volunteering to serve, but I find it hard to believe that they'd turn you away-- you're healthy and able to pull a trigger when told... is age really going to matter to them when all they want is another body to add to their list of people ready to serve?

I know you love to drag people's opinions out to the extreme, Piggy, but I'm just saying that all the men/women in suits who sit up there on the hill and spout off about what a noble cause this war is, are able to do so because they personally have nothing invested in it. Their family tree is going to look exactly the same once it's over as it did when it started.

Congrats on your engagement, by the way! Devil's Tower sounds like a sweet venue! :D

lol...well, most of the "suits" in congress and beyond have actually served their military service in their younger years. I applaud both Bush and Kerry for their service to our country.

"poor kid from the inner city"..playing that sympathy card, eh? my brother served, and we don't fit that demographic. many families have a long line of military service, and the kids keep carrying it on.

but even if it were true, I can't see why offering a poor kid an opportunity is such an "evil" option...they can still say "no"..you are minimizing the power of choice, and actually denigrating those who chose this option as a way to move up.

last I checked, 32 was as old as they would take new recruits (or some age close to that.)

this war is noble, in one sense. Iragi's, by and large, have a hopeful future. I am proud of the courage we have had to stand up to Saddam. Bush was wrong in his initial assessment, but if we say he "lied" to us, then you have to say every Congressman and woman from both parties also lied to us about the war. They all saw the same Intel..this is not a partisan issue, and I suppose that is what irritates me most. Even Clinton knew Saddam was bad for America, and I fully supported his efforts.

the sad part that troubles me is all the innocent people who have been killed. I can't help but think that we have innocent blood on our hands. But many of those looney terrorists who behead people do too. The blame is not one sided. War is awful.

I think that the result MAY be noble but the war itself is not. Iraq MAY become a state governed by the will of its people (note that I do not say a democracy because I do not believe that transplanted democracy is effective). However, that was never the agenda until it seemed like a good soundbite on CNN.

My family is career Marine. My late Uncle who was a WWII veteran and fought at Iwo Jima didn't agree with this war. He was a card carrying Republican too. I'm not sure whether he got "soft" in his old age or simply remembers the horrors of war but he was not a fan of the war in Iraq. The goal was too blatantly one of protecting pecuniary interests. The primary thrust was never to save people.

Anyway, I'm grateful that women don't get drafted. Matt has said that if he gets called, he'll move to Canada...eh?
