I feel like I am two types of people: there is an ideal that I strive for but life is a gray area.

Rainman, what argument has a flaw in it? I made two statements of fact, not an idea supported by facts. Had I said, "It is wrong to attempt suicide because it is illegal," or "this is what the law says so it must be right," then you might have something. Where did you get that I was defending said laws or inferring that they were "right?" Your points are fine, but they are not based on my point at all. Now, since we are here, rights are determined by those who make the laws. Since we are a Republic, there will always be an elected minority making laws (based on opinions which may change after entering office for any number of reasons ie. lobbying) against the majority. Laws and morals are not the same and public opinion is not always reflected or else marijuana and assisted suicide would be legal and our interstate system would be more like Germany's. I agree with you that there are too many laws and we should be able to let everyone do "their thing." The only problem with this is that we're human and pretty damn stupid as a species. This situation is getting worse since natural selection no longer thins the herd.
The theory of evolution is just as stupid as the theories of gravity and electromagnetism.
