OCA 2004 Annual Meeting Announcement

The Ohio Climbers Association is pleased to announce that its’ Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2004 in Columbus, Ohio. Registration for the meeting will begin at 12 noon at the Vertical Adventures (http://www.verticaladventuresohio.com) climbing gym located at 6295 Busch Blvd. At 12:30 pm, the 1st Annual “Best Buckeye Climber” contest will begin. The contest will include difficulty and endurance climbing plus a dyno and pull-up contest. Prizes and recognition will be awarded to the top three men and women in “Weekend Warrior”, “Masters”, and “Elite” categories. Registration for the meeting/contest will be $15 plus Vertical Adventures $7 special group fee ($10 w/equipment).

After the climbing contest ends at 3:30 pm, the meeting will move across the street to a restaurant/pub in the Continent mall where winners will be announced and prizes awarded. At 4:00 pm a brief meeting for the OCA Board of Trustees elections and business will be held, followed by a raffle. During the meeting portion of the program climbers will also be updated on recent OCA efforts to open a new climbing area in Fairborn, Ohio. A slide presentation and entertainment will immediately follow the meeting. Tom Souders is an Ohio climber best known for his first ascents in Red River Gorge, Kentucky. Less know is that Tom is a well-rounded climber who has climbed extensively in the Rockies and has reached the summits of both Mt. Rainier and Denali. In 2003, Tom participated in an expedition to Cho Oyu, the seventh highest mountain in the world and successfully reached the summit. Tom will show slides from his trip and speak on his adventure in Nepal and Tibet.

After Tom’s presentation, entertainment will follow with “Odub”, the climbing rapper. An interview of Odub by Katie Brown recently appeared in Climbing magazine. The Cleveland rock trio “Lotus Pedal” has also been invited to perform. So come join us for a day of climbing, camaraderie, and fund in support of your local climbing access organization, the Ohio Climbers Association. Stay tuned to our website at http://www.ohioclimbers.org or the http://www.rockclimbing.com bulletin board for more details as they become available.

It sounds like a great time though... even though the idea of an Ohio Climbers Association is about as funny as the Super Secret Sport Climbing Mafia. Wish I could go.

I'm sure there are way more climbing areas in Ohio than in Indiana...

There are like 12 climbing areas in Indiana... some with sport routes, some with bouldering, others for ice climbing, and some of the best are closed. Lynn Hill and Yvon Chourinard drove there asses to Indiana to climb at one place. It is closed now though...

Uh, I should say there are 12 climbing areas in Indiana thanks to t-bone.

Royal Robbins climbed in the closed portion of Clifton Gorge. The Karn bros. got their start in Clifton Gorge as did John Markwell & Bob Livingston, founders of The Gendarme @ Seneca. Colorado Mountain Industries (CMI), developer of the forged 8-ring, was originally located in Cincinnati. In upcoming issues of the OCA newsletter, I plan to start a "where are they now" column about top Buckeye climbers.
