Has the GriGri taken over?

I dont even feel comfortable when someone belays me with a ATC anymore. I would rather a Munter. Seems I have been in enough situations where so much more could have gone wrong if it had been an ATC. I climb with plenty of people who choose not to use them...but damn it just makes me nervous. Is this the case with anyone else?

it's never the equipment's fault when something goes wrong, just the fault of the tools using it.

dude the Munter is so 1987

belay devises being as trendy as the lastest bouldering destination...yes the grigri has taken over..all the cool kids use them now

thats the good thing about the Gri-gri... auto-lock.. I recently was working something and falling at the last bolt over and over and pushed one day and pulled the rope out and went for the clip and fell..the person with the gri-gri can yank some in and not worry about the locking as much where the ATC gets to lock it off and ride or a dumbass would try to reel it in.and lock it off in time...THATS where i become worried about ATC..sure its still operator error, but sometimes the urge is to pull some in, especially if it means a bad fall.

The munter is the BOMB!

years and years ago I played with a munter and if I remember right it feed slowly. Nothing worse than short roping your leader, do that enough and they'll stop climbing with you.

in gear climbs an ATC can be very helpful, they provide a little exta dymanics to the system which helps keep gear in its place. GriGri's lock off and never feed out after that...can be hard on gear

From you description above, if I read it right, sounds like he or she is not handling the grigri correctly.

I'm not the biggest fan of the gri-gri. I like my good old fashioned ATC, and sometimes it's cousin the Reverso. Not as safe? Bullshit. As long as your belayer is doing his/her job and paying attention, it's all the same.

ok, the "atc is better for trad routes" myth is completely bullshit. i hear a lot of people say that, but the fact is it's not true. any competent belayer will lock the atc off as quickly as a gri-gri. plus factor in the soft catch using a gri-gay, the "less force on the gear" theory is shot down.

munter kinks the toilet something terrible. ATC's suck. Go with the stitch plate. Now that is old school.

yo Ho, might be hard to debate this on freaky friday but as far as I know an atc will feed out roope a little during a hard faall where as a grigri bites down on the roope and doesn't allow roope to feed.

I think Petzel says that somewhere..
