bd cams .4 - 3 is 3 needed. 51-86mm at this time
bd hexs 7-9

then we get into the fullprice stuff
aliens 1/2-1 is there a comparable metol/bd product ie tcu/met?
tri cams errr tri cams i mean tri cams if u were going to get a few would u stay in the 1.5 range

go with the metolius tcu's. I prefer them over Aliens, though when I used Aliens I preferred those. Either will serve your son well, and if you can get half price tcu's it's a no brainer.
As to tri_cams, I'd get at least the first 3, doubles of the first 2 (pink and red), and preferably the 4th (can't remember the colours this morning - need more coffee).

here's what i would get:
metolius tcu's 0-2 (purple to yellow)
BD camalots .5 - 3
set of nuts
3 shoulder length slings
quickdraws
this rack would get you up most routes you want around here.
with extra money from this i would get doubles on cams from the 1 metolius up to #3 camalot. you might want a #4 camalot first depending on what you want to get on.
skibum, i am pleading with you not to buy the cowbells or hexs as some call them. seriously, if you stick with trad climbing, they are just going to collect dust after you get a couple more cams. plus 7-9 aren't sizes that are not covered by the camalots you are already planning on getting. pleasssseeeeee don't buy those things man...i don't know why i want to help you so bad...maybe because it's such a nice day...anyway, don't buy the useless hunks of hexagonal metal.

Yo HO!! Just got me a code red and some funyons big dawg!!! SHIT YEAH! - Ray, excited about his breakfast
If the rack is mainly for climbing at the Red, I agree that you should skip the hexes. They work better for me in granite - I can't think of the last time I found a good placement in sandstone (like the Red or Southern Illinois). But do go with the smaller tri-cams! At least the pink one - it has worked in places where nothing else would and brought a lot of peace of mind. (Expect to replace it though, there are 'fixed' pink tri-cams all over the world!)
