Online guidebook

Currently the database contains 103 routes.
Some bugs are present. For other details on the route click the icon next to the route name.

A good way to learn anything is just to get climbing involved somehow.

i love it ray. that is supersweet. what a great project. i taught myself a bunch of stuff playing with my climbing pictures sight. if you add climbing behind anything you are doing it ceases to be work.

Ray, How involved is it to create something like that - a searchable database I mean? I manage the archives for the UK survey research center and have created a database of the archives using excel but would love to make it available on our website to be searched by any interested party. The search criteria would only involve 5 or so fields. I know nothing about building web sites or programming.

Sita, I think for someone with no experience with websites and/or programming it could be quite a project. From the bottom up, the guidebook project required knowledge in the following areas (from 1 to 5 with 5 requiring the most experience):
Linux 4
Apache 2
MySQL 3
PHP 1 (thanks to a free script)

You could definitely go the Microsoft way which may be a bit easier but definitely way more expensive (more hardware requirements and the software isn't free as it is with route I took). That would require knowledge of the following:
Windows 2000 Server
Internet Information Server
SQL Server
ASP(?)

I'm definitely not a programmer. I have only a basic knowledge of programming languages. I did pick up some SQL over the past few weeks though which allowed me to complete this project although with front end packages like MySQL Admin I probably could've gotten by without any SQL knowledge whatsoever.

Eventually. I have to get all of the textual data entered first though. Notice there's an "Insert" button at the bottom of the "Routes" and "Wall" form that allows anyone to insert data (hint hint).
