It was probably a dictionay attack. Just set some rules to move everything that isn't from someone in your address book to a temp folder and check it weekly.
The point to spam is that you can send out tens of millions of e-mails essentially for free, and all you need is a few (5? 10?) idiots to buy whatever scam it is you're selling to make it worth it. But with garbled crap like that spam, would anyone reply? WTF?
