That article was very informative and got me thinking. I have had two babies and breastfed them both for a very long time. My menstruation was suppressed for a total of 7 1/2 years. There are studies which show that long term breasfeeding and the resultant suppression of menstruation does reduce the risks of cervical and ovarian cancer, so I agree that there is a lot of merit to suppressing menstruation. The only hitch for me is that I don't like the idea of taking birth control pills at all... but if you are already taking them, I think these new ones are well worth looking into.

Did anyone hear about emergency contraceptive (low dose birth control (Alesse) that prevents progesterone from attaching to the egg - no, that is NOT an abortion) becoming OTC? The official decision comes out next month although the Republicans are having a fit over it and are doing what they can to stop it.

Yeah Meadows --- I think "Plan B" is already OTC - but it's a different method than the Alesse....

Nope, it's Alesse which is the brand name for levonorgestrel. It's a low-dose bc pill which docs prescribe mostly as "Plan B".

Unfortunately, it's still not OTC; women still have to get a prescription.

In Canada the 'morning after pill' as it is called is available from a pharmacist without a prescription. I think that is great. however, there are some crazy pharmacist's whose 'beliefs' prevent them from dispensing the pill. I don't think that is fair...seems to me it is their job to do what the customer asks.

I read the article...it makes sense...but..yea..I'm not pregnant or nursing which is what my body was intended to do... SHHHHhhhhh!!! don't tell my body that..it might get the wrong idea!!

I might give that pill a try sometime...once it has some more time in the market.

i had an unfortunate "accident" while i was in college, and i was damn glad i was able to get that pill, and so was my then boyfriend.
