Rope question again

Post by Jeff »

I'm looking for a 9.7 or 9.8 for this year and wondering who can recomend a good one?
I've seen a few while out climbing but always forget what brand they are by the time I get home.
Preferably a bi color, or middle-marked rope.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Bluewater 9.7 Lightning Pro is supposed to be good. If you want to go skinny, get a Sterling 9.6 Nitro. I love mine.

Don't forget the Beal 9.4 Stinger II if you want a really thin send only rope..still a pretty durable rope given todays technology in this area. Although like SM said above Sterling does make a great rope...they also have a good 9.8 that I have used although I can't remember its name.
Lest we all forget... climbing is a mostly meaningless pursuit that we do for fun.

P2U, they have a 9.7 in the Evolution series, but I don't think they have a 9.8. TBone said it was a great rope though.

I'll never buy a rope less than 10mm. I bought a 9.7 Marathon and after two falls it went soft and had a core shot in the first 9 feet. All those thin ropes are junk! I use a 10.6mm Sterling marathon now... It is certified for 14 UIAA falls. You can't beat that!

Hey dirty,
The 9.7 isn't a Marathon, but I still have heard good things about them. You can't beat a thin cord for long pitches and redpoints though. You don't even feel them on your harness. With that 10.6, it will feel like you have a hog tied to your harness when you start getting much over 60 feet up. I will agree that the Marathon series is great. My 10.3 lasted me 2+ years of total hangdoggin', butt kickin', and flailin'. I just retired it because it was starting to lose it's bounce.

OH yeah, I forgot, Beal also makes a 9.7 that's supposed to be durable AND has passed the edge test. The Booster II maybe?

Anything less than a 10mm is scary!!!!

On a lighter note. This guy last week drowned his ford ranger extended cab in big sinkin creek and I had to pull him back to Miguels. I had a retired 10mm Mammut, so I cut 20 feet off of the bad end and towed him up Mother Lode hill with all their gear and four people in the cab!! And that was the bad end of the rope!!!
