Don't know about skining in TN, but there is some in West Virginia. We're going to White Grass / Canaan Valley the second week of Jan so I'll let you know how it goes. Word is you can ski up into the backcounty which borders the Dolly Sods Wilderness. If you have all your own stuff you can go to the Dolly Sods and ski the roads/trails up there. These places are around Seneca Rock, a close 5 or 6 hours away.
I see they are still lopping off mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Electricity isn't cheap.
Steve,
Skiing in Canaan Valley is really cool. You can start at White Grass but you can also start at Timberline Resort. If you choose Timberline, you will notice that it is mostly a downhill resort with very cool people. Their trails get you to the top of the ridge. There are more than 17 km of trails you can access before you get to the top (if that's what you want to do), or head straight to the top to ride the ridge.
Up there, the view is really cool. I recommend skins!
White Grass will charge you $10 for the day (without gear) and Timberline will charge you nothing to access the top. However, from Timberline, you can opt for a $5 lift ticket (one way) which will get you to the top... from which point you can cruise the ridge at your leasure.
As for me, I am still looking for TN info.

Yeah, lift bother me. That an my total inability to do something with two planks on my feet. But I'll be giving it all a shot in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the info Vic. I'm going with some friends who have the XC thing at White Grass/ Canaan sorta wired (ride the lift, ski the ridge, come down) so I hope it all works out. We are prepared to be hurtin' after our initial atempt at XC. Luckily we are staying in some fluffy house on the slopes with a hot tub. Realy gonna rough it this trip!Bruisebrother wrote:You'al posers on skiis to? Afraid of alpine downhill? Or just riding lifts!
