truck topper

i'm hoping to get a truck and convert it into the perfect roadtripping vehicle ( if i can get a parental loan and they don't mind if i pay them back in 30 yrs). anyway, does anybody know where ( around richmond/lexington/winchester) i can find used truck toppers that are in reasonable shape and are pretty cheap? how much would a new one cost ( just a question b/c i'm pretty broke)? for that matter does anybody know of any pretty new smaller trucks for sale (2000 make or newer)?

hey aaron,

i would go with a van over a truck for the perfect roadtripping vehicle. unless you are planning on doing lots of offroading the ability to get from the driving postion into the sleeping area and the ability to stand up and move around is pretty nice.

if you do go the truck route make your elevated platform only 3/4 the width of the bed. then you will have a hole that you can reach down into and get stuff out from beneath the elelvated section. that way you don't have to remove all your tubs everytime you need to get at a tub in the far back of the bed. does this make any sense? if not i can try to explain it in more detail.

If you buy a used topper make sure you water test it first. I spent $250 last summer only to find that it leaked profusely and the guy refused to take it back.

From what I understand a new truck topper will run you about $1100. However for the perfect road tripping vehicle I agree with merrick, a van is the way to go. With a van you can crank the heat and then jump in the back and fall asleep before it even gets cold. Plus, in my minivan we have an elevated platform that allows for access from the back and both sliding doors and gives plenty of room to sit up. It's not the greatest off road though.

However the very best rig that i've ever seen for roadtripping is a Westfalia (sp?) They arn't very zippy but man are they nice.

Yea if you get a used cap,turn the hose on it for a while and see if it leaks. All my windows leak,but I can take them out and seal them up.A little silicone caulk should do it.

There is a apv minivan that is awd. Chevrolet something or other. as far a trucks a toyota can't be beat. A toyota 4 runner is the way to go with a gear rack on top.

thanks for the info. i kinda wanna truck for offroad capabilities but will think about a van. i know a toyota can't be beat ( remembering saturday)!!!
