if you don't want to install a client, you can go directly to a java chat applet here:

Choose a nick and then enter the channel as #redriverclimbing

Internet relay chat. It started during the first gulf war,caught on and got better.
you can chat,chat privatly,send files back and forth at the same time.Any kind of file. Theres a video version to, if you have the setup for it .
