A former RRG climber, Mark Schorle (re:Bronaugh Guide) lives in Evegreen. I was out for a baby shower for him & his wife Vicki when I did Evans. Climbing Evans was part of my quick acclimatization. The first day I was in Denver I hiked up to an 11,000' pass in Indian Peaks wilderness, the next day I climbed Evans, the third day I was ready for Eldo. The couple of honor and a number of current and former Buckeyes went to Rincon Wall.
Yeah, if you are not experienced at altitude, it could be a problem. Just remember, climb high, sleep low.

I've done Kieners up Longs in summer. I've been looking in the 14ers book today and was scoping out the Northeast ridge of Capital. I was wondering how the knife-edge is with snow. How was it for you? I think I might head down to Ourey too to check out the ice. I'll PM you daggerX.DaggerX wrote:Do have any experance? I live in co and hit the mtns. every week. For a newbie I would suggest elbert. massif, Mount lady washington, Sherman, Bierstadt, Quandary, or Lincoln-Democrat-Bross if you are in the mood for a long day. For something a little hard try spearhead or chiefs head, for something super hard and not for begginers at all try the 3 aposuls, capital peak, little bear-blanca, south maroon bell, or wetterhorn peak. I have been on all those in the winter and they are all great.
For anyinfo at all Pm me and Ill be happy to answer question as I have been on many, many mountains here in CO.

I did Capital, again in the summer. I doubt that any snow would stick to the knife edge. Ice, however, could be a problem on the final pitch to the summit. I remember a 5.4 ish small overhang there. The approach is casual. We hiked in and camped at the base of the route. The only downside is that any food in Aspen is quite expensive. We paid $6.00 for a plate of spaghetti and we're talking over 20 years ago.

I climbed Kilimanjaro in March and didn't have any problem with the altitude. Be sure to stay well hydrated and eat something at every break.
Don't pound down the Advil if you get a severe headache. The last thing you want to do is mask the onset of altitude sickness and run the risk of continuing to go higher. If there is onset, dropping a mere 1,000' often times is all it takes: hence the advise of "Climb high, sleep low".
Enjoy your trip and use common sense.

The DaggerX drama reminded me of this trip and I thought I'd post some pics. I ended up trying to do Sneffels near Ouray but didn't make it. I bivied at aroud 12000 feet but couldn't sleep cause I wasn't aclimatized. On the approach my hip flexor got so tired and sore from pushing the snow shoe forward that I could barely lift my leg. I had to tie a sling to the front of the snow shoe to lift my right leg forward. I had a great time out there though. It was pretty; and it was good to learn I need to get my legs in better shape. The actual pictures of Sneffels peak are the last 3.

J-Rock had quite an adventure at Sneffels too... VERY long story, though...Danny wrote:The DaggerX drama reminded me of this trip and I thought I'd post some pics.
