In case you misunderstood, I wasn't soloing in reality. I was just bouldering the beginning of that route. I see no glory in soloing... unless it gets you on the cover of Rock & Ice.

spraydog wrote:I dislike people who think homosexuality is anything BUT a personal choice.
I don't 'hate' much, but going with the theme of the thread, I 'dislike' it when people make statements that don't make sense when they are turned around on themselves.

(I won't even waste much time on your particularly weak 'natural law' argument. Should I assume that you don't use your opposable thumbs while climbing because ants and lizards don't use them while climbing? Can I also assume that you neither perform nor receive oral sex because birds don't do it? Again, back to the theme of the thread, I 'dislike' so-called 'natural law' arguments because 'natural law' is so clearly arbitrary and 'in the eye of the beholder.')

Sure, there is an element of 'choice' in sexuality - people can 'choose' to live a lie. (And aren't we all so proud of the miserable, closeted gays we all know who choose to 'go through the motions' with their miserable spouses and children instead of being honest?)

More importantly, tell us, spraydog, the story of your 'choice' to live the (presumably) "hetrosexual lifestyle". I assume here that there was a point in your life when you had a crush on Billy and you wanted to kiss him, and at the same time you had a crush on Sally and wanted to kiss her. Tell us about how you made the choice about whom to fall in love with.

tom,
I won't front for spraydog, but give it a rest. like I mentioned before, it isn't all so black and white. I have two gay people as siblings, and both say it is a choice they made, and one they are very happy with. I can live with that. I do not have to beat them over the head with, "no, you were born that way"..to wish them true happiness.

homophobia is made easier in ones mind when we demonize the person, and say they are corrupt because they are making the wrong "choice", and thereby elevating us to an enlightened position. What we are really attempting to do is wiggle our way out of a situation that makes us uncomfortable. There is no virtue in being in either the "choice" or "born that way" camp...the virtue, I would argue, comes from tolerance, but not necessarily acceptance, of anothers lifestyle and choices.

Just a question...someone who says they are bisexual..where they born that way in your mind? Or is that a choice?

Another thing....love IS a choice. We can choose to love (or to hate) anyone or anything. Putting love in the realm of it "happening" to us is a bunch of BS...true love is damn hard to maintain...(just a little therapy from the pigsteak)
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

What I've always found interesting is why anyone believes what another person does is any of their damn business, if it doesn't affect them. Tolerance presupposes authority. To say one "tolerates" another's actions indicates they have some modicum of CONTROL over the first person's actions to begin with (i.e. a parent tolerating a child's unruly behavior, or dog owner tolerating barking). One person smokes crack (or pot, or shoots heroine or drinks alcohol or -insert drug of choice here), another is enthralled by internet porn, another prefers to ride the Hershey Highway and yet another spends nearly every waking moment climbing or thinking about it. Tell me how ANY of the above activities is anybody's damn business but the person involved (barring the person using drugs causing an accident and injuring another person)?

People love to feel like their opinion matters to others. Granted, I am an opinionated SOB, but I also understand that, as little as people's preferences matter to me if I am not immediately engaged with said person, my thoughts, beliefs, ideas and preferences are equally as insignificant to the rest of the world. All of this, of course, hinges on the foundation that what one does does not DIRECTLY impact another person's rights to THEIR actions/freedoms (I don't care about family shock, or "disappointment, or that BS - see above).

Sure, I choose who I wish to be friends with, or respect based upon their actions, philosophies and personal preferences, etc, but, once that decision is made (which, again, only affects ME), my thoughts about the other person are of no consequence to anyone but myself.

It's all pretty basic philosophy, but the majority of THE WORLD can't seem to grasp it. I don't understand why and I can't kill EVERYONE who is an oppressor, so I just keep myself on the clear path. :)
