Another death?

Post by Rags »

I read in the lexington paper this morning that another person has died in the Gorge just this past weekend. A 22 year old died "rapelling" after he took a 50 foot fall. The paper listed the site of the accident as 7 miles from Frenchburg. Climber? Hiker?

Anybody know anymore details?

I just signed on to post this:

FRENCHBURG

MAN INJURED IN CLIMBING ACCIDENT

A man who was rock rappelling fell about 50 feet yesterday morning at Red River Gorge in Menifee County, Sheriff Rodney L. Coffey said. The 22-year-old man, whose name was not released, had an apparent equipment malfunction while rappelling at 9 a.m. about seven miles from Frenchburg, Coffey said. The man was flown by helicopter to University of Kentucky Hospital, where his condition was unavailable last night. An Ohio man died at Red River Gorge on Nov. 16 when he fell 150 feet while camping.

From the Lexington Herald

A cousin in Richmond told me he heard on the radio that there was a bolt failure.

There's another forum with info about this. It's titled "Who Got Hurt" under the "More Climbing" forum.

Someone said it was a lead fall at Fortress. I haven't seen any more specific details.

Thanks, John. I must have overlooked the thread earlier.
