Gay climbers

Post by Huggybone »

I was talking to an Iowan about climbing...
He asked: "are there alot of gay climbers?"

So I thought.
I don't know any (outwardly)gay male climbers. In fact, I've only met two who trip the radar, but that doesn't mean much.
But there are many uncloseted female climbing couples. (as noted in the 'inspiring women' post)

So I tell him this and and he says, 'hm, I would have thought there would be alot of gay male climbers since its an unorganised sport' (yes, he's from Iowa)

SO...why is there a noticable lack of gay male climbers, and a profusion of gay female climbers?

Note: This is not a pickup post, I'm just genuinly curious.

Also note: If your a uber-feminist or uber-intellectual who's gonna lambast me for sport, please kindly do not post, as I am posting an observation that more than one person has noted, and am not trying to sterotype gay folks.

LAST LAMB
That was fun. I have never lamblasted someone.
I try to be a good man but all that comes
of trying is I feel more guilty.

Well I am genuinely curious as to why two heterosexual guys climb together, spot each other bouldering.....
Just genuinely disengenuous.

Isn't it funny that all those useless vocab words from high school stick in your head, but its hard to remeber how to spell 'usually'

What about black people too? This seems like a honkie-dominated sport, or maybe I just live in a honkie-dominated area of the U.S.

The gay males I meet are very cosmopolitan, and would prefer to go shopping on the weekends rather than to a mountain or forest.

I climb with one asian fella who in one year went from shaking on a 5.6 to leading 11b and TRing 12b no falls.

He is like a little bruce lee climber!

But I don't know any black people who climb either, nor any gay men, who climb, but I do know of one lesbian here in our area.

I don't think there is any reason for any of it really...just random people..

i agree with meadows, all the gay men i have ever known were way more into fashion and the theater than nature. whereas lesbians tend to be more independent and "rough and tumble".

I've known some gay climbers. One that I know of was completely open about being gay. He used to work at Climb Time Cincy. The other two just haven't come out of the closet yet.

canadaclimbergirl, Asians are awesome! My best friend is Japanese and is the one who got me into this. They do make great climbers because they are so svelte and strong (mind and body). Must be all the nori and tofu.
