Lynne, I'd say Jtree might be one of the best bets in December. I've hit great weather there. Last year Twall was perfect in mid of December. I've heard some of the lower elevation southern NC areas are year round.

I have a different version of the guidebook.
"Classic Rock Climbs #15: City of Rocks, Idaho", by Laird Davis, published by Falcon/Chockstone.
It's well laid out and easy to use. It's not a complete guidebook of the area, but lists the best routes and certainly enough to keep one busy for at least a couple of weeks.
It's like the City version of the Porter/Snyder guidebook for the red.

Having spent 12 years of my life living in Idaho I can vouch for it being a pretty sweet place for outdoorsy stuff. However, I think the locals are pretty happy that people say "why idaho" and go to new zeland instead. of course I would take New Zeland over idaho any day myself.

if you want real backwoods action there are huge sections of idaho that are just mountains without people or roads.

Idaho is cool... i just thought it sounded like Jeff was going there for a reason other than climbing and was curious if he had family there or something... I think it was the fact that he was going to go to Vegas (a specific city and within site of Red Rock) as opposed to Idaho (a whole state with a lot of stuff to do in it). Idaho has a sheep experimentation station and the Frank Church River Of No Return Wilderness. You can't go wrong with Idaho.. plus, Hackworth lives there now! ;-)

That's exactly why I was thinking about going to Idaho JB, but now I'm having second thoughts.

actually moving from idaho to Chicago was so liberating in so many ways that i didn't even notice how flat it was for two years.

you can get tours of the idaho sheep expirement in Dubois if you stop there and ask for one. they are working on the the callipygous gene which means beautiful buttocks in Greek.

I kid you not.

Really.

I am serious.
