HEY!!!!! I said WAITING TABLES!!!!!
Seven or so years ago waiters made over $8/hour + tips. Tips alone I made over $300/day. And I didn't even have to show any skin!

Working on the fising boats is NOT the way to go. You work out on a boat for weeks at a time sometimes and there's actually a pretty high death rate (the water is so cold that if you fall in you die in 8 minutes from hypothermia). The fishing, however, ROCKS! During salmon season you can cast your line with hook and no bait and pull a fish in. Then they die and the city stinks of dead fish. It's kinda nasty.

my best friend was killed on the Aleutian Enterprise, a commercial fishing/processing vessel, in 1990. The living conditions were horrid, the work was grueling, the pay was mediocre, and the companies who own the ships don't give a damn about the safety of the crew or workers, or responsible fishing practices. After my friend's ship sank, there were supposed to have been sweeping reforms in the industry, but there have not been.
You're absolutely right, Sandy. I've heard horror stories that sound real close to the one you related. I hear there *are* some "good" fishing companies out there that don't treat their workers poorly but it's hard to tell who the "good" ones are from the "bad".

That's a shame to hear! But I certainly want to get to Alaska for the salmon run one of these days. Just couldn't talk Bryan into for our honeymoon! JH, there are plenty of good fisherwomen out there that will debate with you!
