Beginner Needing a Partner

Post by Bobby_Engelman »

Hi,
I'm fairly new to climbing and I haven't climbed outside. I live pretty close to the Red, but none of my friends are willing to climb outside and I don't know any experienced climbers. If there is someone who wouldn't mind helping me out, that would be great. I know this is a lot of work and I'm not giving much back, but I'll buy food.

Hey bobby, i am looking to go down to the red either saturday or sunday. Depending on weather maybe even both days. I have been climbing for a year now. I have all the gear and i am willing to teach a new climber. I will be bringing my dog with me. So muri valley will not be a option. Also do you have any experience belaying?

Thanks,
Tyler

Hello Ty,
I would be willing to help mentor, it's usually safer to have three so the new person can observe and be observed as well to gain proper procedures, let me know about schedules and I can hopefully be of assistance. Are you climbing Saturday Ty?

Bobby - when I was new there were a couple ways I learned to climb outside:

- went to the local gym (for you it's Bluegrass Bouldering in Lexington) and made friends with people that already climbed. I wasn't shy about asking them if they would take me on their next trip down and some said yes.
- went to trail days in the Red. They're a great way to meet climbers. The next RRGCC trail day is June 6. You can sign up at http://rrgcc.org/upcoming-trail-days/
- took climbing clinics. I took one at red rocks in Vegas in the spring as part of Red Rock Rendezvous, one at RockQuest cincy and one at Rocktoberfest (2nd weekend in October in the Red). I also contacted a guide and took a learn to lead trad 3-day clinic in Vedauoo WY.
- spent a lot of weekends at Miguels asking different people where they were climbing. If they were going to a cliff that had a 5.9 or less, I asked to go with them.

Best of luck to you!
