Hi,
I'm sorry if this isn't the place to post this but I'm wondering about the conditions the 1st week of March. We're driving down from Canada and only have at week off. I'm all for good conditions but don't want to have the screaming barfies and be completely frozen all week. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated. Best crags at that time too.
Cheers.
1st week of march conditions?
Re: 1st week of march conditions?
The conditions could be amazing or complete shit. Welcome to Kentucky. Seriously, highs could be in the 70s or teens. You probably just need to check the weather about a week before and decide if it is going to be worth it or not. Tomorrow the high is single digits. I climbed 2 weeks ago in the 50s and it was perfect.

Thanks. That's kinda what I thought.

I'd take the chance. If it is above freezing it's worth it. Sunny crags host some perfect conditions this time of year.

I'm also interested in route conditions for March 7-9. Now that we're only a week out, has anybody been out there? We could use any updates.
Re: 1st week of march conditions?
As of right now everything is a snowy mess, soon to be a swampy mess. The snow should be melting this week with temps approaching 60 on Tues and Wed. The road to Muir was plowed and should be in good shape by then. You really need to just keep an eye on the weather forecast, it's KY in March it can 10 degrees one day and 65 the next.
Re: 1st week of march conditions?
Snow is worst then rain in KY. It seeps more and will make even steep routes wet...

Go to RED Rocks, NV around the 3rd week of March
I know that was no help at all but I couldn't resist.
good luck with it all. i'm cdn, too.

Re: 1st week of march conditions?
Word to the wise, anyone coming to the Red over the next 2 weeks should bring serious muck boots and high-clearance AWD/4WD vehicle. Or just go elsewhere and give the trails and roads a little time to dry out a bit before the hordes descend for spring break...

Re: 1st week of march conditions?
The snow is still hanging out and slowly melting which translates to a lot of runoff. The ground is saturated and all that water has to go somewhere. So temperatures and precip aside it's going to be sloppy here for a little while.
