A few years down the road, and even more of our group have took the time to climb a (or many) 14.
Good job to Kyle, J, Kenny, Dru and Kris (to name a few that participated in this conversation).
Anyone change their opinion?
Can Everyone Climb 5.14?
Re: Can Everyone Climb 5.14?
Can't we all just get along?
Re: Can Everyone Climb 5.14?
Need to stop trying to climb 5.12 trad and focus on something a little more attainable like 5.14 sport.
Re: Can Everyone Climb 5.14?
Not one of those mentioned above is any real suprise, for them, it was only a matter of time. My answer doesn't change, but I don't even remember what my answer was.
How you compare may not be as important as to whom you are compared

If you dedicated all your time to training and climbing sport routes in one particular area. Hyperspecialize. I think so.

In spain people climbing 14a is fairly common, at least more common than in the states. But who knows maybe the grades are just super soft.
Re: Can Everyone Climb 5.14?
The question is unclear, so I have two answers:
1) Can you pull a random adult from a population and train them over years so that they would *always* get to 5.14? No, absolutely not.
2) Can you pull a random, athletic adult from a population and train them over years so that they would *always* get to 5.14? Again, the odds are against it.
3) Can you pull a random, athletic teen from a population and train them over years so that they would *always* get to 5.14? This is trickier, but I think many would make it if they were truly able to dedicate the time and effort.
4) Can you pull a random baby a population and train them from a young age to get to 5.14? Probably. I guess the best way to find out is to make climbing an olympic sport and see how China does.
The question not asked, but implied:
Are 5.14 climbers at that level because of natural ability or hard work? The answer: probably both, just like the top 0.1% of any sport or other endeavor.
