A good example why Instapundit is not a good source of science-related news.

No, nobody spent $3 milling on THAT. The 3 millions that are quoted were spent on US National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, following people ranging in age from the age of 11 to 34, and covering 15 years. (1995-2009) The study follows up everything you could possibly think of, from BMI, to depression, to suicide, to education. You name it. Once you have the data, you can analyze it for anything you want, whether it is association of depression rate with gender, or cancer rate with ethnicity, OR, if you so choose, BMI and sexual orientation. But I promise you, this sort of statistical analysis does not require $3 million. It is the study on the whole that takes resources.

Are you disputing the need for large population longitudinal health studies?
