 Thank you for this amusing mental image of you steering a cute girl in a neon orange tank top by her upper arms back to her group.
Sorry you looked lost. The neon YOLO tank threw me off and I couldn't adjust my eyes to see who it was.

You can't graciously give me hand-me-downs and then act all confused when I wear them, man!

1. Safety First.
2. Safety First.
3. Safety First.
4. Safety First.
5. Safety First.

Crag ethics and environmentalism will be developed over time. Other climbers will, hopefully, harass the crap out of ethics offenders. Bad safety practices may never be developed over time. There are usually not too many observers watching another person cleaning 90 foot off the ground. Bad habits could get deeply entrenched without proper instruction.

Seriously people, who gives a dang about the environment, noise volume, or even poop in the trail in comparison to safety. I would rather experience all that than see a busted up and bleeding, possibly dieing, newbie.

Just go to any newbie crag over a weekend and watch all the people. Half the time no one knows how to keep a brake hand on the rope. I can not remember the last time I saw climbing partners actually double check their partner's knots before they left the ground. I would put up with a year full of crap music blared through smartphones if the new climbers coming out were actually concerned about safety first.

New climbers should be taught that death is more than a possibility. Experienced climbers need reminders. Death is the enemy. There is no place for ignorance or arrogance when any human is facing the possibility of death. Maybe if more new climbers were fearful of what they are about to do there would not be some many newbie ethics offenders out in the woods.

Safety.

+1

People used to gain respect for their environment and the dangers that exist there before they began climbing. Unfortunately, that is not a requirement for city climbing.

http://gunksclimbers.org/news.shtml There is an article from Nov 1 that mentions a Gym-to-crag program (its all the press I could find but I did not try hard) that is in the works but is currently tailored to the GCC but is being adjusted for a nationwide rollout of the program (sometime this spring I think). Seeing it first hand I am psyched to see the program in action nationwide! Should be an excellent asset for you.
