Was in the gorge proper today. Strange to see gates closed and locked yet people from all over the country parked at the gates and hiking in. F the "government".

Another question. Would the RRGCC be supportive if a person posted full directions on this site or at all the climbing gyms?

I am asking because a lot of people keep asking me "when is it going to open?". I respond with "it is". Then I get "can you give me directions?"

I am not sure how to respond to the "directions" question???

Even as a developer I am getting a lot of conflicting information and rumors and I do not want to be saying or doing the wrong thing.
The RRGCC is working very hard to add a FAQ page for Miller Fork Recreational Preserve. It will be available through rrgcc.org in the coming weeks.

It will include maps, directions to the area and the best directions to the crags* that we can provide at the time.

The MFRP is a work in progress that requires a lot of man hours and collaborating from all parties involved.

*It is difficult to provide accurate directions to crags because they are being established even as we speak. We work hand in hand with developers to provide the best information that we have available.

Additionally we have not established a central and permanent parking area, so for the time being it is difficult to provide accurate walking directions since every party could be starting from a different point.

A few things to keep in mind. There are creek crossings - plan on getting wet or wear appropriate footwear. There are no official trail makers at this time. You might get lost. There is very little official trail infrastructure. You will be bush whacking at times.

As soon as the FAQ page is live we will spread the news as fast as possible.

Hopefully very soon,,like by Monday night? I'm headed down early Tues for the fest and would love to hike and examine the new area with a helpful map. Won't have any internet once I drive the 450 miles.

If anyone's griping about a lack of directions, maps, etc... I suggest you learn how to use the vast ocean of data available at your fingertips.

Need map of MFRP? From another thread:

Paul's got a section of the RRGCC website in the works that'll contain much more info on the MFRP, and since he's a GIS nerd, I'm sure it'll include even more maps. ;)
Got those maps? Good. Now go here: http://www.nationalmap.gov and download the topo quads you need.
Government shut down? Go here: https://maps.google.com/ and utilize the "Terrain" layer.

Still need help? MFRP is not ready for you yet. $0.02

I may be alone , But I think the Miller 309 should develop the way it has. I say give the Sport Climbers some of the Trad Experience for Free! Climb Safe.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hopefully it is going to be a moot point soon bc RRGCC is working hard and will have the directions posted soon. BUT...

Disclaimer: I haven't been to MF yet, but I have put together enough info from similar sources that you have shown to feel that I can find my way around next time I go to the red, even if none of the people who promised to let me tag along are going to be available. Cliff was actually the most helpful person here in terms of telling me how to find information. And I don't even know him.

However, with that in mind, how about hypothetical directions like this: after you turn right to H.C. spur road, go for about 1.5 miles, and then park soon after you cross the creek once (or twice, or however many times it is). Continue hiking straight, crossing the creek twice more, until you see a faint trail on your left leading to Cooper's Cove.

Would it REALLY kill anyone to say this? Is it REALLY better to have people possibly getting stuck because they attempted to drive across one creek crossing too many? Is it going to improve the driveability of the road, if the said stuck people then call their friends with a big truck to pull them out?

If the answer to "Is it open?" is YES, and the answer to "Can I tag along next time you go there?" is also YES, then the answer to "Can you give me directions?" should ALSO be a yes. In practice, it is YES, YES and NO.

And for the record, if I do end up going there, and find my way around, I WILL be giving directions to anyone who asks, though i would do it by PM or similar private means, in deference to "it is open, definitely, but kinda-sorta not-fully, but you shouldn't dare to say that it is not open, because it is open..."

You should have a 4 WD vehicle and know how to use it.
HC road (hills) are already starting to look like the ML hill of years past.

The trail to Cooper's will be on your right. And those creek crossings are different creeks. If you're not sure that your vehicle can manage a creek crossing, don't try.

Which walls have a reasonable hiking distance with the road closures? Sounds like Indian creek is not a good option without a bike. Tower rock, long wall, small walls?

Those 3 are all open with their usual parking. Only Lower Gorge crags on roads 9, 9b, and all the ones no one goes to on Tunnel Ridge Rd. and Chimney Top Rd. are affected.
