Route Recommender

All this talk of the new guidebook has me thinking…

I think it'd be beneficial (or at minimum, cool) to have a route recommendation section for the online guidebook/forum. I'm thinking unique recommendations per user profile- Pandora-esque. Perhaps in a section on the RRCGuide home page.

It’d also be possible to have a day-trip version of the algorithm that recommends based on a location. You say you want to climb at location X, and it restricts recommendations to a radius from X.

For your consideration:
-Most routes are already tagged by characteristics (bouldery, technical, slab, classic, beautiful, exposure, etc). Including steepness.
-Users log routes climbed/selected as projects (including their personal ratings of the climb). See where a user's preferences lie, and what grade they're climbing at.
-Location data by wall is good enough.
-Based on characteristics, stars, and difficulty, recommend some routes.

IDK what language the site is written in, or how the data is stored, but all the necessary info already exists...


Anyway, with all the new routes coming in, it’d be a good way to motivate people to get out to different areas. Or just identify gumbies and send them all to Bruise Brothers. Very customizable.

Funny you mention that.. I'd really like to know the developer for each route, and when they set it. Everyone seems to have a style. Say I really like Porter routes- it'd be nice to seek more out. Or maybe Mr. Piglovely has a tendency to bolt soft routes, so I know I can walk his 11d, but maybe leave a few burns for Andrew's 11d sandbagged stuff...

Butane Junky is my favorite within the past several months, and maybe more. It has very unique movements, and it is fun to watch strong people get worked on it. It is listed as slab, and while it leans in, it is really just technical/bouldery with rests everywhere, and there is no superhuman strength required. There is none of that foot smearing or standing on nothingness involved either. If you climb 12a or harder you will have fun on it whether you style it or have to stick-clip the first few bolts and initially wonder how the grade is 12a. If you like watching your friends cry and suffer, as I do, then have them go first and laugh at them as they proclaim their onsight from the ground and then flail all over the bottom few bolts followed by a queasy fear of the unknown for the remainder. 5 stars!!!
