There also is that small thing that climb time does not teach lead belay. That and last time I checked rockquest charges 30 bucks for the lead belay class, and it's only on certain days at certain hours. They might have changed, but that what was going on last time I checked. (6 months ago)

Why would it be selfish? It'd be better for him to learn how to lead belay with an experienced climber than with a total gumby. He's gotta start somewhere. And if you're not experienced enough to allow a beginner to lead belay you on moderate (beginner) routes, then you probably shouldn't be instructing in the first place. It's routine for a guide to so on a daily basis.
i don't think it's selfish, and i agree with you for the most part. however, i wouldn't be super-psyched on risking my life (holds break even on moderates) for strangers who have absolutely zero experience. seems like they need a full service guide (belay instruction, cleaning, ethics, etc.) not a good-hearted volunteer -- think C2C said as much earlier in this post. if someone is willing to undergo the full gumby experience for free for strangers, then more power to him/her.

Need to learn how to lead climb + belay. Can't wait to spend a week at the gorge!
