Top Roping

Post by willclimb4food »

I'm just getting started with outdoor climbing and i'm looking for a good beginner top rope route in the gorge. I can do either a hike around or i can repel down and climb back out. Either way, i dont have trad or sport gear yet, just enough stuff to top rope. Any suggestions on regions, walls, routes, etc. Trying to go on sunday (4/15).

I hope this doesn't turn into an accident thread.

This isn't the answer you are looking for but i seriously suggest you find someone with gear that knows how to climb and go with them. If you have to bribe them with gas money and beer... so be it.

You will find that there are few routes that are easily set up on TR. As recommended in the thread above, you may be better off with a guide to "show you the ropes". That said, I think Practice Wall at Muir may have some routes that can be set up on TR. If you know how to clean a route (as in you have done this multiple times before) then you could find yourself a rope gun that could set it up for you at any of the popular crags.

Good luck, hope you don't die. No, seriously.

How is it possible that rappel is misspelled so often.

Wouldn't suggest Muir... Their rules state that "Access to Muir Valley for the purpose of rock climbing is strictly limited to those individuals who are experienced and competent rock climbers..." It doesn't sound like willclimb4food is very experienced or competent. Hire a guide.

either hire a guide to teach you how to climb (redriveroutdoors.com is great) - or go to new river gorge were there are plenty of places to set up TR's.

I just had a terrible vision.... can you imagine what the Red would look like if it was highly accessible to top-roping....
