Right. If you drive a truck that gets 15mpg, you are spending about $30 just for a daytrip to the Red from Lexington... wow. And it's over $70 if you're doing it from Cincinnati. A honda civic cuts the price by more than half.

Yep, do the math and go for a trade-in before everyone else get the same idea, you know, before the price you can get for your ride is basically determined by its mpg.

Round trip from Cincy to the PMRP and back - 332 mi x .55 / mi = $182.60
Replace front axle shot from following Bost around on the back roads = $514.85
Having an outdoor meeting w/ the Access Fund followed by climbing @ Drive By = Priceless

I was talking about this with a friend who often drives. We came to the obvious conclusion that we'd much rather pay to ride with someone else because it gets weird when it comes time to pay for gas. Sometimes it feels like people are doing you a favor by paying you for driving. Often people just say goodbye leaving the driver with the tab. I wonder if the Cinci drivers have it worse.

From East side Lexington to the average Southern Region is 66 mi
mpg: ~24, price of gas $3.80
2 x (66 mi) / 24 (mi/gal) x $3.80 $/gal = $21
group of four people = $5/ person.
group of 2 = $10/ person
The math is pretty simple. Either you pay or someone else pays for you.

Now think about previous conversations about supporting climbing venues like Muir and the RRGCC/ PMRP. If climbers feel that they don't have to pay to get to the crag (an immediate obvious cost) they sure as hell don't have to pony up the cashola to support the venue attended.

This post is coming from a guy who often says, "don't worry about the gas, I got this one." I think we all need to shift our perspective a bit. Beer and climbing cost money and that is that.

Yeah, I feel your pain... 66 miles from Lexington, yes, very painful indeed!

Now try this: 393 mi from Cleveland x 2 ways / 25mpg x $3.80 for gas = $120 round trip! And that doesn't count the driving around the gorge itself.

Luckily though, for longer trips people are much more likely to pony up for gas. It is easy to shrug off a 1hr drive, especially if regular partners do a good job of alternating cars, but for a 3-tank trip people pay attention

I never had anybody chip in for gas when they rode with me. Sometimes they'd offer a slice or two of pizza and then proclaim that was their share. Back then when gas was under 2.00 it was bad enough but today I can't afford bumming.
