Ode to the Pessimist

Post by One-Fall »

Personal progression in climbing could be distilled to two tightly-connected elements; first, the amount of work you put in, whether through time spent on the wall or in the gym or through some combination of the two. Second, though, is the perceived potential of return from every second spent climbing/training – how much better you think you can even get. No amount of training can overcome the crippling belief that you cannot possibly climb harder than a certain grade.

Lee, this would make total sense if I was 5'6 and weighed 124 lbs. But since I do not, I am fully justified in my belief that I will never be strong. Quit spreading false hope.

One day, Kyle, you might get to 5'6". Until then, you can be the shortest guy to climb 5.15 besides Ramonette.

wait you mean someone short climbs hard? Next thing you tell me will be that a beefcake can climb hard, or a tall guy, or *gasp* even a girl! (Of course I am making the decision here to ignore Lynn, Klem, Sharma,Josune, Andrada, Holloway, Potter, etc...) Wait maybe you have have a point.

I'm always optimistic on what I'm capable of, but 20 years of failing starts to wear you down.

5.15. never gonna happen
5.14. could happen, but won't because I will never devote the time required to make it happen
5.13 will happen. Is this your year Piggie?
