What would make YOU want to give money to Muir Valley? In other words, what type of public statement would make you feel like you were absolutely obligated to pull $5 bucks out of your wallet every time you climbed at Muir?
Just knowing there are people out there who will let us come and enjoy their slice of heaven is enough reason to donate. This is why I open my wallet to them once a year and on every visit to their valley.

We are preaching to the converted, so I hope something comes from the pay to park idea.
Can't we all just get along?

Why is it so hard to look at it as just an admission fee rather than a donation? If you climb there throw a ten in the box. If you don't climb there then whatever your heart desires. Where else can you get a full day of fun on $10? Kings Island? Reds, Bengals or UK tickets? NOPE! Furthermore, buying a ticket to any of those listed grants you no commitment on their end of anything more than a single day. Why should it have to be different for Muir? Why do they have to guarantee access for enternity just to get a few dollars out of someone to cover OPERATING COSTS! Not profits. But heaven forbid they collect any excess that could cover personal investment. Climbers would demand profit sharing and stocks should that happen. GET REAL or GET BENT! There, I said it.

Climbers, egocentric to begin with, are quick to extend exceptions to themselves: "Oh, that doesn't apply to me. I'm pretty much a local, brah. Donations are for those big groups of climbers doggin' away at the great wall. Me? I'm headed to crush my proj--you may have heard of it, it's called Jesus Wept. I'm badass. These signs are for the other people, but not me. I'm badass."

Yeah--it doesn't even have to dispense tickets. It could have 3 buttons on it:

1. I'm donating $5 today
2. I'm donating $10 today
3. I'm not donating to Friends of Muir Valley today.

.....People just need to be confronted

That's pretty sick. Even if you're being a smartass, my guts churned at the thought.

i would like to offer some helpful advice. why, you ask? i have no idea. anyway, i think this will probably be helpful because: (1) i never donate to the rrgcc or fomv; (2) i rarely donate to anything marked by a sign that includes the word "voluntary donation" or something similar (torrent falls being an occasional exception since dr. bob took ownership). i am the target audience.

basically, it's simple: get rid of the word "voluntary" AND have consequences for those who don't donate. do those two things and you will get your money...from the people that still climb there. yes, i realize the wording is for legal issues, so figure something out. yes, consequences are mean and will hurt peoples feelings, but get over it...and don't do something gay, like hand someone a pamphlet or preach to them about the need for batteries to operate two-way radios. off the top of my head i'd imagine the most effective system consisting of a day-pass system, and letting a local tow-service patrol the lot, or buying some tire boots and patrolling the lot yourself.
Yo HO!! Just got me a code red and some funyons big dawg!!! SHIT YEAH! - Ray, excited about his breakfast
