I have burn marks on my inner thighs from an ATC after a 60m rappel. I just took the ATC off the rope and left it on my belay loop. I was wearing shorts, and when I bent down to take off my climbing shoes...OUCH!!!!! friggin hurts.

If you are really flying, and ATC will heat up enough that if you stop on the rope, you risk melting the nylon. (so I hear, but it has never happened to me)

Again, I prefer the ATC because the 8 coils the rope so badly. However, I agree that an 8 is a MUCH smoother Rappel.

I sometimes use double ropes and then the ATC-XP would be the better option. Rapping down on two 9mm ropes in a regular ATC is FAST!!!

The scenario changes if you are ice climbing too, cause then you have a frozen rope (even if it is dry coated). And that is ALWAYS fun.

if you want a slower rap just use two beaners instead of one with your atc. it will slow you down just fine. if you are worried about heat get teh trango pyramid. once they are broken in they work just fine.
