Hi. I'm currently figuring out whether to spend my first 2012 trip in Hueco (Feb) or RRG (April). I'll be solo.
The biggest deciding factor is going to be the feasibility of making it work for three weeks without a car (i'll be flying in).
My plan would be to make it to Miguel's, set up camp, and try to use my urban charm, cash and other "resources" to make friends and spend as many rain-free days crushing rigs as i can.
I have rope (70m) and 18 or so draws, am an incredibly attentive belayer, will let you hang on your project with nothing more than words of encouragement, am witty (but only in the dry humor way, which everyone loves), will climb from sun-up 'till sun-down, and will not be picky about what cliffs I go to (my mission is to get on as many lines with as many stars as logistics allow).
I can currently lead 5.11, but will hang dog 5.12a/b if i need to (i'd actually like to, as the purpose of my trip is to figure out if I like sport climbing or not, and whether or not i can get good at it if i actually spend time doing it).
Given those things, my questions are:
- Would it be easy enough to find partners every day?
- Would not having a car there make things prohibitively difficult?
- How difficult is occasionally getting to a grocery store? I don't mind living off of cans and dry food, but having occasional access to perishables would be nice.
- Is spending three weeks at Miguel's enjoyable? Is there enough to do there to keep from going insane? I spent a week at RRG last year (also April), but eight of us shared a Cabin and only went to Miguel's for gear or pizza.
- Any other tips/suggestions/things to consider?
Note: I'm planning to do the first three weeks of April. My other option would be the last two weeks of April and first week of May. Thoughts on that?
Edit: I do not have a vajay-jay.
Three weeks at the Red in April. Can i do it car-less?

Ignore Pigsteak... he lives in a fantasy world thinking that he could approach a hot climber chick and get some.
Push back your trip as far into April and May as possible. Better weather.
I am sure that you can find your share of rides and partners despite your lack of a car or female anatomical equipment.
Rain is no problem in the Red. There isn't day you can't find a dry crag to climb at.
I am sure you can bribe someone with (your cash) charm to make a run to either Stanton or Beattyville to grab some grub.

Miguel's parking lot is pretty much always overflowing...It's pretty easy to find a partner and a ride to almost any crag. Now finding a partner that won't drop you...

You will be fine, just drop "rig" from your vocabulary

So I'm assuming the 3rd, 4th weeks of April + 1st week of May is the better of the two options?climb2core wrote:Push back your trip as far into April and May as possible. Better weather.
Better temps? I actually don't mind the cold, but I suppose if there are more people at Miguel's later than earlier, it might be more strategic for me to follow suit...

Early spring tends to have more routes seeping and wet. Climbing in cool temps is, well, cool... but camping and climbing in the rain for 3 weeks can get old. Last spring was ridiculously wet and routes seeped well into May.

You know, I remember that.
I had to do the first three moves of Scar Tissue super fast to avoid getting a soaked hand.
And even then, I ended up stopping on a jug to dry my hands on my pants. The start hold was a slippery mess of wet chalk...
