I like my 2007 Jeek wrangler unlimited. v6, real transfer case and all wheel disc brakes. Mine came with 18" rims which I will be upgrading to 17" and the tires of choice for me will be the Goodyear authority, which is sold at Wal-mart sooper cheep. Ten more bucks buys the road hazard. I will also install powertraks lockrite lockers in both differentials. A sway bar disconnect is essential.

Clevis, I also have a Jeep (2005 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited). Bone stock except for more aggressive tires and a Yakima rack. With factory lockers front and rear, and a 1mph crawl speed it is simply unbelievable off-road. Fuel economy sucks. I believe yours may do a bit better in that department.

I wasn't real big on the jk. I have owned a bunch of tj's. But with the kids i needed something with a back seat. The draw backs of a Tj were always the same. Too small to do anything with other than drive. No inside storage and suck ass fuel.
The JK has a powerful v6 that will push this flat-faced ride well over 100mph. It gets decent fuel for its capability (20+) and its comfortable. The trade-offs were 20 more inches of wheel-base and a much wider stance which can count for or against. There are some aftermarket gadgets that can improve its off-road-ability. Most can be had for about a $1000. I like the sway bar set up. They flipped it to an under the rail placement and its much more friendly to aftermarket disconnects. Its approach angle is improved also. I've taken it up rock hill off of walkers creek and it did relatively well. I hung up on the skid plate over the gas tank because it hangs about two inches lower than the drivers side. Considering that rock hill is a class three jeep trail and I was in a stocker-no-locker, i'd say I did all right.

I agree with all you said. Fortunately I have the long wheelbase version of the TJ Rubicon, available only in '05 and '06. It has way more inside storage than the standard wheelbase vehicle, along with much greater stability, while retaining excellent maneuverability. As much as I admire the many improvements that come with JK I wouldn't want anything bigger than what I'm driving on some of the trails around here. Now if I could just get 20mpg on the highway.
