So much for mentoring...

Post by climb2core »

We were at the Shire Saturday and there was a group from Illinois there as well. One guy with experience setting up the TR's for the newbies on the 5.7 to 5.9s. All should be good, right? Well Mr Mentor gets tired of having to climb to set the TR and then climb again to clean. He then begins to try to convince the newbie that if you can tie an eight you can clean the route. I speak up and say the top of a climb is no place to be learning to which he responds "That is how I taught everyone". The debate went on about who was doing what with their group and I left for north 40. My gf stayed then hears the plan is going to be for the guy that just learned to tie in to clean it. To her credit (only climbing 9 mo) she steps in and explains to the newbies that shit can go wrong and mentions the person who decked cleaning at MV a few weeks ago. She then offers to climb and clean if Mr Mentor won't... The newbies were now appropriately afraid and the Mr Mentor was appropriately shamed into climbing the eight again.

So much for mentoring being the solution to educating the newbies..

the obvious solution is to pay me $45k a year to be the Red River Gorge Climbing Sheriff.

someone set up the Paypal account for donations and i'll go ahead and charge up my cow prodder.
