I'm wondering if they rank Lexington based on the state population as a whole. When I lived in Lexington during grad school, the population looked about the same as everywhere else, yet Kentucky was always in the top five (or bottom five, depending how you look at it) for obesity. But since moving to Pike County...yikes. 30% obesity would be something to shoot for on this side of the Appalachians...

Kentucky as a whole is fat & sedentary from a statistical standpoint, with some of the worst vital health indicators in the US, but Lexington is not. This article is epidemiologically flawed because it was largely based on Lexington hospital data regarding strokes and cardiovascular emergencies. However, most patients from rural Kentucky, especially the eastern half of the state, have poor access to health care in their home counties & wind up in Lexington hospitals when the need arises (as it often does). This has led to an artificial inflation of the data that the authors chose to use in compiling this spurious ranking. This sort of error wouldn't have made it through round one of submission were it peer-reviewed.
