Noob questions - rope length and stick clip

Post by jonlong724 »

What rope length should I get for sport climbing at RRG? I've been told that 60m is sufficient for most, but I don't want to rule about a bunch of good routes because I need a longer rope.

Also, is a stick clip handy to have? If the first bolts are pretty high, I'd rather clip for safety, since I don't have a crash pad.

Thanks!

Stick clip mandatory. 70m only needed for a noob if you want to able to chop your ends a few times and still have a 60m rope.

Thanks for the response. When you say 60m is fine for a noob, what do you mean by that? I suppose a more apt question is what is a rule of thumb for rope length and height of a climb (as listed in the guidebook). 60 m = 196 feet, so I should be able to climb anything up to about 100 feet?

60 m will get you up and down 95% or more if the routes in the Red, at any grade. Stick clip mandatory.
