Good Winter Sport Climbing

Post by buckoff6183 »

Relatively new to sport climbing, climbed at the Red most of last season, now I am looking for some place good to go for a week or two this winter. Either bouldering, or single pitch sport, or a combo of both. Wold like to find an area with some good moderate climbs. Was thinking of Red Rocks, or Hueco, but can't seem to find a whole lot of info on the routes at red rocks. I hear there is a lot of sport climbing there but all I can find is multi pitch trad route info. Any info would be great. Thanks

There is definitely a week or two's worth of sport climbing at Red Rocks. Also quite a bit of bouldering too, though not as popular as Hueco. Also, from Las Vegas its a 5 hour drive to both Bishop and Joshua Tree, if you want some variety. Usually is pretty sunny and not too cold for sport climbing this time of year, but be warned it can get windy at times. And the campground there seems to be in a wind tunnel when it does, but it's vegas, cheap hotelrooms abound

If you are just looking for a couple of days, you can get some decent sport climbing in at the Obed in the Winter. The Obed is a few hours further south of the Red so it is usually a few degrees warmer.

Owens River Gorge, Bishop bouldering, and Sonora sport climbing. There is also pretty good year-round sport climbing in the Santa Monica mtns northwest of LA if you find yourself in that area.

Mexico has some great sport climbing in the winter. Potrero Chico, is super classic and has a TON of moderate sport climbs. It also has long multi pitch sport climbing.

I do not know how it is to travel in Mexico right now with the drug wars... I went last year at this time and it was no problem. Has anybody on here been down this season or are planning a trip this winter???
